How to make a Bootable Pen Drive

In Today's era where technology is growing day by day and it is making everyone's life simpler than before, and people do not want to keep their tools or software's handy every-time, also do not want to carry it in a CD/DVD as those are less reliable and every-time needs to protect from scratches, etc. people are keeping their data in the USB drives, for example, Pen Drives where they are compact and easy to carry.

Here, in this blog, we will learn "How to make Bootable Pen Drive" to format a machine. There are some steps through which we can convert a normal pen drive into a bootable pen drive. There is a need for a healthy ISO file of an Operating System.

Create a Bootable USB Drive:

1) To create a Bootable USB Drive, Insert a USB/Pen drive in your system and make sure there is no data in it and it should be at least 8 gigabytes in space in order to make it for Windows 8.1 or Windows 10 as those contains very heavy files.

2) Click on the Start menu and search for Command Prompt, when it shows in the search box then right-click on it and run it as an Administrator and click on Yes if it prompts. A black command prompt window will open.

3) Now when the command prompt is open there is a need to type a command which is "diskpart" and press Enter.

4) Now it will show you Diskpart> in the command prompt and we will write another command which is "list disk" and press Enter. This command is used to bring a list of connected devices.

5) As you have already connected your USB drive to the computer, it will show up all the partitions or drives connected to your computer. Find your USB drive from the list and if it doesn't show then remove the drive and connect it to another USB port of your computer and run this same command again.

6) Select your respective drive by its drive number. "Type Select "Disk <X>" and press Enter, here "X" is the drive letter or drive number of the USB drive. For example, if our USB drive is Disk 0 then we will type "Select Disk 0".

7) After selecting the disk there is a need to clean that drive with the help of the Clean command. Type "Clean" and press Enter.

8) When the process is completed then there is a need to create a partition in the USB drive by typing "Create partition primary" and press Enter. Once the partition is created type "select partition 1" and press Enter again.

9) Now when the partition is created and we have selected that there is a need to Active it by "Active" command, type this command and press Enter.

10) To format the USB drive type "format fs=ntfs quick" and press Enter, it will start formatting that partition.
  • Please note If this command doesn't work in your machine or your system platform supports UEFI (Unified Extensible Firmware Interface) then you can format it with "Fat32" and the command would be "format fs=fat32 quick" and press Enter.
11) Type "exit" command and press Enter. This is done now, your USB is bootable now. You can place an Operating system's ISO file or any image file to install it on another computer.
